Hilton FamilyBuckley School, Sherman Oaks, CA, Dwight School, NYC, NY; Canterbury School, New Milford, CT; Browning School, NY, NYSomeone said Paris and Nicky both went to Le Lycee Francais in Los Angeles, but it is hard to believe Paris could cut French. That may explain another person writing to say they went to Buckley in LA (Sherman Oaks) in their earlier years but later switched to a parochial school in LA for middle school. Buckley is also where fellow "farm girl" Nicole Richie and many other celebs and celeb kids (Matthew Perry, Gaby Hoffman, et al.) go. The Hiltons ended up on the East Coast, where Nicky went to Sacred Heart. She graduated in 2001. Sacred Heart is a school in the Sacred Heart network made famous by the Kennedy girls. Paris was off to boarding school at Canterbury for about a year before transferring to Dwight in the city. She did not graduate. Canterbury is the school most associated with Dominick Dunne (see his entry) while Dwight was originally an academy of classical studies. Another future heiress, Casey Johnson, of the Johnson & Johnsons, also attended Dwight, as well as Chapin, I'm told. (Her father, Woody, went to Millbrook.) Dwight is a popular choice of foreign dignitaries (e.g., those based at the UN) for their children. Dwight is also one of several prep schools (with Lenox and Horace Mann) where Lizzie Grubman went. She is the daughter of celebrity lawyer Allen Grubman who made headlines at a Summer 2001 Hamptons party where she ran into passersby in her SUV. Lizzie left Dwight early, and the other schools, too. Other notable attendees of Dwight include Fiorella LaGuardia, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Moses, and various members of the band, The Strokes, including Julian Casablancas and Albert Hammond, Jr. The Hilton girls' younger brother went to Browning, mentioned earlier on these pages in sections for Robert Chambers and Howard Dean. Browning is mentioned more in depth in the entry for the Rockefellers, and is also associated with members of the Sulzberger and Luce families.
Hilton, JamesVarious schools (Repton, Leys, etc.Hilton's story about Mr. Chips was later made and then re-made into film, the latter version starring Peter O'Toole. The film was made using Repton School's grounds. The real school in the story is a composite and is primarily modeled after a Cambridge school, Leys, with Chips himself being drawn from W.H. Balgarnie. Other credit is given to the Monoux School buildings.
Hiss, AlgerPotomac School, McLean, VA and Dalton, NYC, NYHiss' son, Tony, attended both Potomac and Dalton, as well as Putney in Vermont, where Tea Leoni went to school (for more on Putney, see her entry). Dalton is also mentioned here also under Danes, Bernstein, Walters, and Vanderbilt. Julliard faculty member and noted actress Marian Seldes also went to Dalton. Other names associated with the school are Tracy Pollan, Jennifer Grey, and Sean Lennon. Anderson Cooper went there, and it is a top choice for New York-based celebrities.
Hochschild, AdamPomfret School, Pomfret, CTHochschild, the founder of "Mother Jones" magazine, attended Pomfret and said of the school that there were strict class divisions and divisions between faculty and students.
Hopper, DennisWooster School, Danbury, CTHopper's daughter attended Wooster. I read an account that said that at his daughter's graduation here, Hopper was on drugs and hit on her best friend.
Howar, BarbaraHolton-Arms School, Bethesda, MDNancy Gore and socialite Barbara Howar were classmates at the school, which is also the alma mater of Julia Louis-Dreyfuss. Jackie Kennedy, Aerin and Jane Lauder, Patricia Richardson, Margaret Warner (of the PBS News Hour), and Rachael Yamagata also went to Holton-Arms.
Hughes, HowardFessenden School, Newton, MA; Thacher School, Ojai, CAA correspondent tells me "Fessy" is the alma mater of Howard Huges, as well as General George S. Patton (who went to the Hill School in Pottstown, PA, mentioned several times here). Others to have passed through Fessenden include John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, mentioned separately on these pages, as well as Christopher Lloyd, Don Hewitt, James Franciscus, and General Pershing's grandson. For more, see John Kerry's entry. I have a note that Hughes also went to Thacher. For more on Thacher, see the entry on these pages for Noah Wyle.
Hulce, TomInterlochen Arts Academy, Interlochen, MI Interlochen alums include Meredith Baxter, Sufjan Stevens, Selma Blair, Sean Young, Jewel, and Linda Hunt. One reader told me actor-producer Hulce attended the school's summer music camp but attended North Carolina School of the Arts his senior year. Interlochen is known for the extreme talents of its students and for the number of presidential scholars it has turned out over the years.
Hume, BritSt. Albans, Washington, DCSee separate mentions of the school under the Bush and Gore families.
Hunt, LindaInterlochen Arts Academy, Interlochen, MIInterlochen alums include Sufjan Stevens, Meredith Baxter, Sean Young, Selma Blair, and Jewel. The school earned an additional mention earlier here in an entry for Tom Hulce.
Hurt, WilliamMiddlesex School, Concord, MAHurt attended Middlesex, which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Classes at the school are taught in the Socratic style. Other notables to have passed through Middlesex include a string of prominent politicians: Bill Richardson of New Mexico, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., William Weld, Christian Herter, and Joseph Gray, and others. Middlesex is where the 1992 film "School Ties" was filmed, featuring Chris O'Donnell, who went to Loyola in Chicago, and Brendan Fraser. Middlesex, a correspondent writes, is popular with several notable families, including the Bass, Kravis, Warburg, Forbes, and Saltonstall families. One person wrote to say it is also where Steve Carell from the Daily show went.
Huston, AnjelicaKylemore Abbey, West IrelandNo other information on this, but it is an interesting entry.
Irving, JohnPutney School, Putney, VT, and Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, NHIrving's kids went to junior boarding school Fessenden, then on to Putney where one of them dated Tea Leoni (see separate mentions under Alger Hiss and Tea Leoni). Putney students pick vegetables and milk cows. Irving, who attended Phillips Exeter, was a wrestler and coached his children in wrestling, too. For more on Putney, see Tea Leoni's entry.
Jackson FamilyMontclair Prep, Van Nuys, CA; California Preparatory School, Encino, CAJacko reportedly went to Montclair for a few middle school years but another correspondent places him at California Preparatory School in Encino, which makes sense because the family's homestead is there. Apparently, La Toya, Marlon, Tito, Randy, and Janet also attended the school, at least for awhile. About Montclair: singer-actress Cher dropped out of Montclair to pursue a music career. Someone recently wrote to say Michael Jackson went there for a few years. Another person to go through Montclair was Brady girl Eve Plumb. For more on Montclair's celebs, see the entry for Cher.
Janney, AllisonThe Miami Valley School, Dayton, OHEmmy award-winning actress Allison Janney ("West Wing") attended this Ohio prep school in Dayton. One correspondent wrote to say Janney only went there for one year then headed off to Hotchkiss. (For a profile of Hotchkiss, including a mention of Janney, see the entry for John Hersey.) The school is also mentioned on these pages in entries for Pater Matthiessen, the Fords, and the Hayward family. Others assocated with Hotchkiss include a Luce, Archibald MacLeish, and Justice Potter Stewart.
Jennings, PeterNightingale-Bamford, NYC, NYThe all girls school is very popular with elite NY families, including Jennings and his former wife, writer, Kati Marton, who sent their daughter there (their son went to Choate). It is commonly called "Nightingale" or NBS. The school earned a mention in the Woody Allen movie, "Everyone Says I Love You." Other famous Nightingale alumnae are clothing designers Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss ('93) and Charlotte Ronson and Congressional legend Millicent Fenwick. One correspondent writes that Shoshanna met her former flame, one Jerry Seinfeld, during what NBS students call "park period," when girls do outdoor sports.
JewelInterlochen Arts Academy, Interlochen, MIOther Interlochen alums are Meredith Baxter, Sean Young, and Linda Hunt. See separate mentions. Also check out Selma Blair's entry.
Johansson, ScarlettProfessional Children's School, NYC, NYPCS is where many child stars head off to in NYC. The school day is organized to allow for professional commitments. Other PCS graduates are Adam Arkin, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kate Luckinbill, Milton Berle, Sidney Lumet, Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Midori, Christina Ricci, Ally Hillfiger (Tommy's duaghter), Mischa Barton of "O.C.," Jamie Gleicher of MTV's "Rich Girls," and Christopher Walken. Other alums and graduates include Tara Reid, Jena Malone, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Julia Stiles, Gaby Hoffman, the Culkin kids, Vanessa Carlton, Rickie Lake, and Phoebe Cates.
Johnson Family (BET)Episcopal H.S., Alexandria, VABrett Johnson of the BET Johnsons went to this suburban Washington, DC prep school, also famous as the place where Senator John McCain was educated. See his entry for more.
Johnson Family (Johnson & Johnson)Pingry School, Martinsville, NJ, Millbrook School, Millbrook, NY, and Dwight and Chapin in NYCNY Jets owner Woody Johnson, of Johnson & Johnson, went to Millbrook in upstate New York. The school features a 6-acre zoo, a bird-banding station, and a bird rehab facility in its community, as well as a hockey rink. Johnson's daughter, uber-deb Casey Johnson, went to Dwight, where her fellow heiresses the Hilton sisters went, as well as Chapin, where Donald Trump's daughter, Ivanka, also a model, attended school. Casey's second cousin Jamie Johnson, who is behind the HBO film, "Born Rich," attended Pingry in New Jersey where he knew S.I. Newhouse IV, the grandson of Conde Nast CEO S.I., Jr. Andrew McCarthy came through Pingry, I'm told.
Jones, RashidaBuckley School, Sherman Oaks, CAQuncy Jones and Peggy Lipton's daughter, Rashida, attended Buckley, as did Matthew Perry of "Friends" and perhaps Melissa Rivers. Another Buckley School is located in NYC and is mentioned in an entry for John Lindsay.
Jones, Tommy LeeSt. Mark's School of Texas, DallasJones came from a troubled Texas background and attended St. Mark's on a scholarship before heading off to Harvard to play football, where he would eventually room with Al Gore. He attended St. Mark's on a scholarship. Luke and Owen Wilson went there, too. Luke is a 1990 graduate. Owen left and went on to graduate from New Mexico Military Institute, class of 1987. Others to go through St. Mark's include classic rock titans Boz Scaggs ("Silk Degrees" = great album) and Steve Miller.
Jordan, Royal Family (various family members)Various schools The Maret School building, located in Washington, DC was formerly the home of Presidents Van Buren and Cleveland. The school is popular with Washington-based diplomats and heads of state who send their children their from overseas, such as King Hussein and Queen Noor, whose son went there and to Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA, as well. John McPhee, Steven Brill, and members of the Rockefeller family went to Deerfield, too, I'm told. Queen Noor went to Concord Academy in Concord, MA, where Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg went (see Kennedy Family listing). One Jordianian girl went to the Westover School in Middlebury, CT, a girls boarding school where actress Ina Balin sent her girls and where George Lazenby, a James Bond, sent his girls. A second Jordanian girl graduated from Dana Hall School in Wellesley. Male Jordanian royals also have a connection to the junior boarding school Eaglebrook
Kempner, NanSarah Dix Hamlin School for Girls, San Francisco, CASocialite Kempner attended this tony school, called Hamlin. Someone wrote to say actress Eve Arden went there, too.
Kennedy Family (Girls)Various schoolsKennedy girls have attended Sacred Heart, Miss Porter's, and Stone Ridge Country Day School, which is located near Washington, DC. Ethel Skakel Kennedy and Maria Shriver both went to Sacred Heart. Jackie attended Miss Porter's, as did her relation, Edie Beale (see separate entry) and the actress Gene Tierney. Jackie also went for awhile to Holton-Arms, mentioned here in the entries for Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Barbara Howar, and the Gore family. Kerry Kennedy Cuomo is an alum of the Putney School in Vermont (see entry for Tea Leoni). Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg went to Concord Academy in Concord, MA, also the alma mater of Queen Noor of Jordan. A correspondent writes to say that Caroline first started out at Brearley and that she and her husband have chosen Brearley and Collegiate for their children. (Collegiate is where David Duchovney went and interestingly, Brearley is where wife Tea Leoni went.)
Kennedy Family: JFK and JFK, Jr.Various schoolsI have a note saying JFK started out at Canterbury for middle school plus one year of high school at Canterbury, then headed off to Choate [now Choate-Rosemary] for his sophomore year, where older brother Joe Jr. went. There, he was reportedly a mediocre student who ended up at Harvard anyway. (We should all be so lucky.) JFK reportedly also started out at junior school Dexter, in Brookline, and later attended Riverdale Country Day School in the Bronx when the family lived in Riverdale. JFK, Jr. started out at St. David's on E. 89th and also went to Collegiate School, where David Duchovney and Paul Weitz later went, but graduated from Andover in 1979. Andover is listed here elsewhere in headings for Jack Lemmon, James Spader, and others. Patrick J. Kennedy was a member of the school's class of 1986. Choate is mentioned under headings for Jamie Lee Curtis, James Dickey, John Moxley, Ivanka Trump, Glenn Close, and others, too. Canterbury is mentioned elsewhere on these pages in entries for Dominick Dunne and the Hilton family.
Kennedy Family (Other Boys)Various schools Teddy Kennedy at least briefly attended Fessenden School in Newton, MA before heading to Milton Academy in Milton, MA, where Dominick Dunne's father reportedly coached Bobby in hockey, and where TS Eliot and James Taylor went. One interesting tidbit comes from a reader: another Fessenden student was John Kerry, which makes him and Teddy Kennedy the only US senators to serve concurrently from the same state and to have attended the same school (but Tom Eagleton and Jack Danforth of Missouri hail from St. Louis Country Day School, I'm told. Their colleague, Pete Wilson, who served for a time as a Senator, also came out of St. Louis Country Day School.) Another person says Teddy went to the now-defunct Jesuit school, Cranwell, in Lenox, Massachusetts, for his freshman year and then went to Milton, where he graduated. Robert Kennedy attended three schools in a five-year career, someone wrote me to say. One was the Benedictine school, Portsmouth Abbey, located in Rhode Island, where Teddy also went. (See Christopher Buckley's entry). Teddy also went to Palm Beach Day School. Bobby attended St. David's on E. 89th and may also have gone to St. Paul's. One reader tells me Bobby may have graduated from Riverdale, but another person wrote to say he graduated from Milton. A student at Georgetown Prep outside of Washington DC informs me that Sargent Shriver and RFK Jr. went to his school, where McCarthy family members have studied. ("Schola Praeparatoria Georgiopolitana" indeed.) I have more than one note saying that Stephen Smith, a Kennedy, went to 150-year-old Poly Prep in Brooklyn, NY. Bobby Jr. went to Pomfret where the Corzine family has ties.
Jack KerouacHorace Mann School, Riverdale, NYFor info about this school, see entries for Roy Cohn, Pope, Bob Rafelson, and James Salter. Among others who attended the school are attorney General (NY) Elliot Spitzer, poet William Carlos Williams, and "Rosemary's Baby" author Ira Levin.
Kerry, JohnNumerous schools, including St. Alban's, Groton, Groton, MA; Fessenden School, Newton, MA; Institut Montana, Switzerland; St. Paul's School, Concord, NH In Spring 2003, the Washington Post reported that St. Paul's was the seventh school Kerry attended by 8th Grade. His father was a State Department official. Kerry also attended Institute Montana in Switzerland, a boarding school, while his father was posted in Europe. This school is, by its own admission, popular with royal families in Europe, including the Spanish and French royals. Kerry was there in the early 1950s and went skiiing and sledding while at the school. He graduated from St. Paul's, however. When Kerry was there, the school was all boys. Kerry was active in sports and founded the John Winant Society, a debating organization. Kerry was a Democrat and a Catholic. The school was largely Republican and Episcopalian. Kerry also attended St. Alban's at some point (see mentions under the Bush and Gore Families.) Kerry also attended a junior boarding school called Fessenden or "Fessy", according to a corresponent, where Ted Kennedy spent time as well as Howard Hughes and General Patton. At Fessenden, Kerry befriended General Pershing's grandson, Richard. My correspondent also tells me that Fessenden is favored by a number of notable families, including the Duponts. St. Paul's, where Kerry ended up, has been described as "ultra WASP" which is appropriate, considering that St. Paul's is where the late sociologist E. Digby Baltzell of the University of Pennsylvania went. (He coined the term WASP.) St. Paul's is also associated with Judd Nelson, Alexis Denisof, Catherine Oxenberg, agent Andew Wylie, FBI head Robert Mueller, Archibald Cox, Robert McNamara's son, Craig, former NYC mayor John V. Lindsay; and Mitsubishi Corporation president Minoru Makihara. St. Paul's is where poker champs Howard Lederer and his sister Annie Duke went. ()Their father taught English there. St. Paul's is also the alma mater of the doomed yuppie character Paul Allen in the book and film, "American Psycho."
King, StephenMilton Academy, Milton, MAMaine-resident King is a benefactor of the school. His children may have gone here. Other Milton students were TS Eliot, Bobby and Teddy Kennedy, and James Taylor.
Kline, KevinSt. Louis Priory, St. Louis, MOThe exeedingly talented Kline attended this St. Louis school which has its roots in Ampleforth Abbey and College, Yorkshire, UK. Klein's portrayal of songwriter Cole Porter is noteworthy and Porter himself attended Worcester Academy in Worcester, Massachusetts. PS-For more Missouri standouts, see the entry for Vincent Price.
Kluge FamilyVarious SchoolsAndrew Rockefeller Kluge, a Rockefeller heir, went to York Prep, where Liv Tyler and Calvin Klein's ex, Kelly, passed through. For more info on the Rockefeller clan, see their entry. Andrew's younger sister went to Chapin, where Ivanka Trump went, and boarding schools in the Northeast and Switzerland. John W. Kluge, Jr. went to Andover, Class of 2001.
Knowles, JohnPhillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, NHWriter Knowles allegedly set his novel, "A Separate Peace," at Exeter, which has been called the "Harvard of Boarding Schools," but I read an article saying the work was based on a Milton School boy and was simply set at Exeter. Another alum of Exeter is Suzy Wetlaufer, the former editor of Harvard Business Review, who was forced to resign in 2002 because of her love affair with former GE CEO Jack Welch. Another reader wrote to inform me that David Eisenhower and Fred Grandy (of Love Boat and US Congressional fame) were roomies at Exeter, and that the class of '66 included US Senator G. Kent Conrad and QVC kitchen maestro Bob Bowesox. Other Exeter notables include writer John Irving, Donald Hall, actor Lex Barker, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Booth Tarkington, Duponts, Gettys, Joyce Maynard, Peter "Jaws" Benchley, George Plimpton, Gore Vidal, Alessandro Nivola of "Laurel Canyon," athlete Amos Alonzo Stagg, Nicholas Katzenbach, and Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown.
Koch, Howard W.Peddie School, Hightstown, NJSee the entry for John Nash for more about Peddie and this film producer, who also wrote M*A*S*H. Class of '33.
Koch, WilliamCulver Academy, Culver, INKoch, who is behind the energy powerhouse Oxbow Group, attended Culver. He won the America's Cup in 1992 and backed a female Cup effort in 1995. Culver sponsors a summer naval school for sailing. See separate mention of Culver under Stanwyck, Barbara. Other Culver grads: Hal Holbrook, George M. Steinbrenner, Lowell P. Weicker, Gene Siskel, Roddy McDowell, and playwright Josh Logan.
Koppel, TedMcBurney School, New York, NYHenry Winkler and former Nightline host Koppel are both products of McBurney. For more on the school, see the entry for JD Salinger. Then there's this tidbit: "Page Six" quoted actress Sally Kirkland as saying Koppel was "the first man to ever cop a feel" when she was 14, he was 17 -- at McBurney.
Kozlowski, L. DennisBerwick Academy, South Berwick, MEDisgraced Tyco chair Kozlowski used some of his fortune to benefit this Maine prep school where his daughters went. The New Yorker reports that one year he gave $300,000 to the school.
Kraus, NicolaChapin School, NYC, NYFormer childcare slave Nicola Kraus, the author of "Nanny Diaries" and "Citizen Girl," attended tony girl's school Chapin, the alma mater of Ivanka Trump. Chapin is also where Amanda Hearst went. Kraus' parents ran Ursus Books and Prints in the Carlyle Hotel.
Lachey, Nick and 98 DegreesSchool for Creative and Performing Arts, Cincinnati, OHNick Lachey attended this school along with brother Drew and their fellow bandmate, Justin Jeffre. He appeared in Peter Pan with classmate Carmen Electra! Another SCPA-er was Sarah Jessica Parker.
Lauder, ErinPhillips Academy, Andover, MA; The Holton-Arms School, Bethesda, MDShe spent a summer at Andover in 1987, someone wrote me to say. Others from Andover? Humphrey Bogart, the Bush family, Duncan Sheik, Bill Belichek, Dana Delaney, Jack Lemmon, Frank Stella, JFK, Willow Bay, James Spader, and more. Aerin is mentioned under entries for Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Barbara Howard because of Holton-Arms. Bit of a discrepancy?
Lederer, Howard and Annie DukeSt. Paul's School, Concord, NHThese two poker champs went to St. Paul's where their father was the faculty of the English department. St. Paul's is mentioned many times on these pages, especially in the section on John Kerry.
Leetch, BrianAvon Old Farms School, Avon, CTHockey sites place NHL star Leetch at Avon Old Farms from 1983-1986. He scored 160 points in 3 years and also excelled at baseball. Leetch's coach at Avon was John Gardner. Another Avon alum is Pete Seeger.
Leoni, TeaBrearley School, NYC, NY and the Putney School, Putney, VT Brearley, where Leoni went, is characterized by an enviroment of "intellectual rigor, tolerance, and social activism." It used to be a feeder school for Bryn Mawr. Brearley has been called the most intellectual of NYC schools and has also been called the "Radcliffe of the secondary school world." Robert De Niro's business partner, uber-producer Jane Rosenthal, chose the school for her daughter, as did Kevin Bacon and his wife, Kira Sedwick, for their daughter, a correspondent tells me. Leoni, another correspondent tells me, only went to Brearley through 8th grade. She also attended Putney, where Alger Hiss' son was a student. Others associated with Putney include Wallace Shawn, film director Errol Morris (class of 1965), Kerry Kennedy Cuomo, Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, and Timothy Daley. At Putney, students milk cows and pick vegetables.
Lemmon, JackPhillips Academy, Andover, MA and The Rivers School, Weston, MAOne person wrote to say Lemmon first attended the Rivers School, but is better known as an alum of Phillips, which is usually called "Andover." He was remembered as being hysterically funny and animated, entertaining his classmates and teachers. Other Andover attendees were President Bush (both older and younger), Humphrey Bogart, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Frank Stella, Dr. Benjamin Spock, and a number of others mentioned throughout these pages. Actor James Spader attended the school but dropped out. Andover consists of more than 150 buildings spread out over 500 acres and includes an art gallery, museum, and radio station. Other celebs listed as having gone to the school include Peter Sellers, Samuel Morse, Philip Wrigley (of gum fame), photographer Walker Evans, writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, MASH writer Ring Lardner, Jr., writer Tracy Kidder, theologian William Sloane Coffin, Jr., LA Times publisher Otis Chandler, Ted Forstmann, actor Frank Converse, Newsweek writer Jonathan Alter, and "Jane" magazine editor Jane Pratt. Duncan Sheik reportedly studied there at least, maybe even graduated.
Lennon, SeanLe Rosey, Switzerland and the Dalton School, NYCSean attended spent part of his high school years at this elite Swiss school, perhaps the prep school of all prep schools, which is frequently chosen by world leaders for their children. Other Institut Le Rosey alums include the son of Elite model founder John Casablancas, Julian Casablancas (of The Strokes), Michael Korda, the Aga Khan, the Duke of Kent, and Dodi Fayed. John Kerry attended Le Rosey for awhile. Correspondents tell me that Lennon did graduate from the elite NYC school, Dalton, mentioned several times on these pages.
Levin, JenniferBaldwin School, NYCLevin attended Baldwin before meeting up with her nemesis, Robert Chambers, who attended several prep schools (see separate entry).
Lewinsky, MonicaBel Air Prep, Bel Air, CAThe star of the Clinton Administration attended here, according to Joe Eszterhas. Lewinsky also attended the Hawthorne School in California, the same school where lobbyist Jack Abramoff went. Abramhoff's father was a Diners Club Exec.
Lewis, HueyLawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, NJA correspondent tells me that Lewis, of Huey Lewis and the News, scored an outstanding performance on his SATs while at Lawrenceville and went on to graduate in 1967. He was a member of the Hamill House there. The latest tip I received is that Patty Hearst's daughters went to Lawrenceville, which is also popular with the Bunn (coffeemaker) family. The school is mentioned elsewhere here (see the entry for James Merrill).
Lindbergh, CharlesSidwell Friends, Washington, DCLindbergh attended the school, I'm told, which is affiliated with the Quaker Church. It is discussed elsewhere here, especially in an entry for Chelsea Clinton.
Lindsay, JohnBuckley School, NYCFormer NYC mayor Lindsay attended Buckley School, perhaps the most traditional boy's school in New York, where students address male teachers as "sir." School alums include Topper Mortimer, members of the Rockefeller family (e.g., Mark Rockefeller), Brad Aston, Jay Aston (of "Gene Loves Jezebe"l), Ken Natori, who in June 2003 feted the retirement of famed Buckley coach Bill Trauth, and "Bonfire" protagonist Sherman McCoy. George Plimpton (see separate entry) once wrote about the typical "Buckley Boy" in a reminiscence. (A lesser example of the Buckley education can be found in one Paul Cortez.)
Linny, LauraNorthfield Mount Hermon School, Northfield, MALinny graduated from Northfield Mt. Herman, where Natalie Cole and Uma Thurman went, then moved on to Northwestern and later Brown. The school is famous for its strong liberal tradition and is popular with successful African-Americans because of its history as a racially tolerant prep school. Writer Christopher Wren's kids also attended Northfield Mount Hermon during his travels as a foreign correspondent writing for the New York Times (see separate entry). Other individuals with a connection to Northfield Mount Herman include scholar Edward Said.
Loeb, LisaHockaday, Dallas, TXLoeb attended the prestigious girl's school, located in the leafier parts of the Metroplex. She credits the school's focus on discipline and academics for part of her success, citing in particular her poetry classes there. Apparently, the Bush twins (Barbara and Jenna) also attended the school.
Louis-Dreyfuss, JuliaHolton-Arms School, Bethesda, MDActress Louis-Dreyfus, who played Elaine Benes on Seinfeld, attended this suburban Washington girls school and lived in a dorm, I'm told, although the school is now a day school. See other mentions under Gore, Howar, and Jackie Kennedy (i.e., the Kennedy girls). Aerin and Jane Lauder, Patricia Richardson, Margaret Warner (of the PBS News Hour), and Rachael Yamagata also went to Holton-Arms. Husband Brad Hall went to Williston Northampton.
Ludlom, RobertCheshire Academy, Cheshire, CTLudlom's alma mater is also the alma mater of banking titan JP Morgan, a correspondent writes. Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek also attended Cheshire.
MacArthur, General DouglasTexas Military Institute, San Antonio, TXMacArthur was in the class of 1897 of this powerhouse school, which dates back to 1893. For more, see the entry for the Eisenhower family.
MacFarlane, SethKent School, Kent, CT"Family Guy" creator MacFarlane attended this school, mentioned here in entries for Ted Danson, Bobby Farrelly [one half of the comedy-writing team], and Treat Williams. Former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, Model Emme, and singer K.T. Tunstall also went to Kent. The other Farrelly, I'm told, went to Andover.) Other Kent notables include Carter Administration official Cyrus Vance, the philosopher John Rawls (Class of '43), Moses Farrow (Mia's son), and Prince Carl-Philip Bernadotte of Sweden. Kent should not be confused, however, with the South Kent School, in South Kent, CT, where Gordon Clapp of NYPD Blue went. Another Kent note: William H. Armstrong, who wrote "Sounder," taught at the school for more than 50 years.
Mamet, DavidFrancis W. Parker School, Chicago, ILTheater great Mamet attended this Chicago school, as did Darryl Hannah, Jennifer Beals, Anne Heche, Jonathan Alter, and others.
Marriott, Evan Wallace (aka Joe Millionaire)Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham, VAJoe Millionaire's father, a banker, sent his son here with the hope he would flourish. Evan, his son, a Virginia Beach native and now a construction worker hunk, played sports, including football, but cited his favorite subject as "study hall." For another reality show prep alum, see the entry for "bachelor" Andrew Firestone.
Marshall, J. Howard, Jr.George School, Newtown, PAYou really didn't think you were going to find an entry for Anna Nicole on these pages? Her sweetie, J. Howard Marshall, attended George, where Stephen Sondheim, George Segal, and Blythe Danner went (see separate entries). Another correspondent writes that George is also where Bill Cosby's kids went. Others: actress Donzaleigh Abernathy, the daughter of civil rights icon Ralph Abernathy; actor Stephen Lang and his son, Dan; some members of the Berenstain Bears' clan; and Eldridge Cleaver's daughter. PS: I got another piece of mail saying Sondheim went to Fieldston for elementary school.
Masterson, Mary StuartDalton School, NYC, NYActress Masterson attended Dalton with fellow actress Julie Warner. Claire Danes and Tracy Pollan also went to the school, which is mentioned several times here, most extensively in the heading for Leonard Bernstein. Leonard Bernstein was a big supporter of the school. The children of Alger Hiss and Gloria Vanderbilt went there. Julliard faculty member and noted actress Marian Seldes went to Dalton. Other celebrity parents who chose Dalton for their kids also incude Dustin Hoffman, Leslie Stahl, Linda Evans, and Mia Farrow, a correspondent writes. Sean Lennon is a graduate of Dalton.
Matthiessen, PeterHotchkiss School, Lakeville, CTThis school as ties to the Ford family. Henry Ford II, Edsel Ford, and current Ford CEO Bill Ford all attended this school, which is located in a woodland setting with two lakes on the grounds. The school is rooted in classical education and offers more than 225 different classes in a 6-day school week. The endowment is among the richest in private schools: nearly $400 million. Time Magazine's Henry Luce also went here--on scholarship--as did renaissance man Peter Matthiessen, who co-founded the Paris Review along with George Plimpton. One Hotchkiss alum wrote to tell of other Hotchkiss notables: poet Archibald MacLeish, Justice Potter Stewart, "Hiroshima" author John Hersey, Lewis Henry Lapham II (1952), businessman Arthur Kittredge Watson, John Henry Hammond, Jr., baseball commissioner Francis Thomas Vincent, Robert Bork, Forest Mars of M&Ms fame, Wlater Chrysler, Charles Edison (of NJ), and Ambassador Clark "Sandy" Randt.
