Danson later headed off to Stanford. Dominick Dunne had at least one of his kids at Kent, too. Students at Kent have chores to do. Other Kent notables include musician K.T. Tunstall, model Emme, Cyrus Vance, the philosopher John Rawls (Class of '43), Bobby Farrelly [one half of the comedy-writing team], Prince Carl-Philip Bernadotte of Sweden, Mia Farrow's son, Moses, and "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane. "Sounder" author William H. Armstrong taught there .
Day Lewis, DanielBedales School, Hampshire, England UKDay Lewis, the son of a renowned poet, first attended a traditional boarding school but fled for the walls of this progressive, "liberal and let it all hang out" school where students "organize themselves and work on their own." The progressive school was also chosen by two members of Pink Floyd, by Princess Margaret, and by Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes for their children. Minnie Driver went there. It is known for its strength in art and drama; the theater is called the Olivier Theater. Bedales is also where Frances Partridge went, and when she was a student there, one could swim naked.
Dean, HowardBrowning School, NY, NY and St. George's, Newport RIPresidential candidate Dean attended Browning in NYC and the very tony St. George's, which is located in Newport. Dean is a stockbroker's son and was raised in East Hampton. Browning is mentioned several times on these pages (see entries for Robert Chambers). Browning is mentioned more in depth in the entry for the Rockefellers, and is also associated with the Hilton sister's brother and with members of the Sulzberger and Luce families. Doubleday, NelsonSalisbury School, Salisbury, CT and Deerfield Academy, Deerfield MAPublisher Doubleday is a graduate of Deerfield, a Connecticut school, which is located at the foothills of the Berkshires. Reportedly, actor William McNamara attended Salisbury, where Doubleday was also a student.

Douglas also attended the Allen-Stevenson School in New York (as did Michael Eisner) and Eaglebrook, a junior boarding school. (Eaglebrook deserves special mention as a junior school because it is the the pre-eminent junior boarding school for boys in grades 6-9.) Michael Douglas' classmate at Eaglebrook was RJR titan Henry Kravis. Other Eaglebrook family names include Scribner, Schwab, Rockefeller, Eisenhower, Roosevelt, and more. Many kids who go there are the offspring of international statesmen. Another top junior school is Fay, mentioned below under the section for Dominick Dunne.

Dunne, DominickCanterbury School, New Milford, CT, Kent School, Kent, CT, othersDominick Dunne attended Canterbury, a strict Catholic school, as did Sargent Shriver (and more recently, Paris Hilton). Dunne graduated in January 1944 and says he would sneak into the town to purchase the NY tabloids to read. One account I have says that his father coached Bobby Kennedy in hockey at Milton Academy, Milton, MA (but Dunne writes in his autobiography that his father was a heart surgeon.) Teddy Kennedy also went to Milton, as did TS Eliot, James Taylor, and Toure (see separate mentions). Dominick Dunne's children went to a number of schools. Griffin went to the Fay School, a junior boarding school in Southborough, Massachusetts. Dunne's late daughter, Dominique, went to Westlake, mentioned here several times, and graduated from Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, CO. His children also attended Taft and Kent (son Alex). Taft is where Mary Chapin Carpenter went. Kent is where singer K.T. Tunstall, model Emme, and actors Treat Williams and Ted Danson went, I'm told (see Danson's entry above). Dunne's brother, John Gregory Dunne, went to Porstmouth Abby, mentioned earlier here in the section for Christopher Buckley.
Eggleston, WilliamBrooks School, North Andover, MABrooks is also the alma mater of Malcolm Stevenson Forbes, Jr., also known as Steve Forbes. For more on the Forbes family's educational choices, see their entry. Eggleston, by the way, is a brilliant photographer. Another person out of Brooks is Parker Stevenson, who graduated from the class of 1971 under the name Richard Parker. Other Brooks notables include Michael Rockefeller, Cosima von Bulow, Bartle Bull, Henry Luce, III, Jamie Auchincloss (a relative of Jackie Kennedy).

Another San Antonio school is Texas Military Institute or "TMI", now "TMI-Episcopal School of Texas," which has reportedly sent more people to West Point and Princeton than any school in Texas history. It is also the oldest Episcopal college prep school in the southwest and dates back to 1893. Those who passed through its halls include the Klebergs of King Ranch, General Douglas MacArthur, Dan Blocker of "Bonanza," Metropolitan opera star Rafael Diaz, Henry E. Catto, Jr., baseball great Ross Youngs, and others.
Electra, CarmenSchool for Creative and Performing Arts, Cincinnati, OHCarmen Electra appeared in Peter Pan with classmate Nick Lachey, who attended this school along with brother Drew and their fellow bandmate, Justin Jeffre. Another SCPA-er was Sarah Jessica Parker.

Tabor is also mentioned in an entry for David Chokaci. (One person wrote to say Fireman may indeed have gone to another school, Thayer, but Tabor is listed as his alma mater in his bio.) I've heard Tabor associated with several kids of celebs.

Fletcher, LouiseAll Saints' Episcopal, Vicksburg, MSThis great "Cuckoo's Nest" actress went to All Saints', a feeder prep school for souther universities and colleges. It dates back to 1908 and features an imposing building with large white Corinthian columns.
Fonda, BridgetHarvard-Westlake School, No. Hollywood, CAOther attendees and graduates include the Nixon girls, Tori Spelling, astronaut Sally Ride, Elizabeth Montgomery, June Lockhart, Candice Bergen, Jake Gyllenhaal, Myrna Loy, Shirley Temple, Jamie Lee Curtis, Mindy Cohn of "Facts of Life," who was discovered here, and a number of other celebrities and celeb kids.
Fonda, Jane and PeterEmma Willard School, Troy, NY; the Fay School, Southborough, MA; and Westminster, Simsbury, CTThe all-girl Emma Willard School turned out Jane Fonda and Sara Lee, too. Ford FamilyHotchkiss School, Lakeville, CT; The Gunnery, Washington, CTHenry Ford II, Edsel Ford, and current Ford CEO Bill Ford all attended Hotchkiss, which is located in a woodland setting with two lakes on the grounds. The school is rooted in classical education and offers more than 225 different classes in a 6-day school week. The endowment is among the richest in private schools: nearly $400 million. Time Magazine's Henry Luce also went here--on scholarship--as did writer Peter Matthiessen. One Hotchkiss alum wrote to tell of other Hotchkiss notables: poet Archibald MacLeish, Justice Potter Stewart, "Hiroshima" author John Hersey, businessman Arthur Kittredge Watson, John Henry Hammond, Jr., Lewis Henry Lapham II (1952), baseball commissioner Francis Thomas Vincent, Robert Bork, Forest Mars of M&Ms fame, Walter Chrysler, Charles Edison (of NJ), and Ambassador Clark "Sandy" Randt. A note on Edsel Ford: he graduated from The Gunnery after leaving Hotchkiss. Other Gunnery graduates are Sam Newhouse, race car driver Sam Posey, and several Tisches. Another person to come through The Gunnery was the late author/playwright Fred Mustard Stewart, a graduate of Lawrenceville.
Foster, JodieLe Lycee Francais, Los Angeles, CAFoster attended this French school and was valedictorian. Leelee Sobieski also graduated from the school. The Lycee's program is built around a bilingual program of French and English. (Note: there is also a Lycee Francais in New York City.) I'm also told Claire Danes went to Le Lycee Francis (Los Angeles), too.
Franken, AlBlake School, Minneapolis, MNA correspondent writes to say Al Franken is a graduate of this Minneapolis prep school, which dates back to 1900.

Gasteyer, AnaSidwell Friends School, Washington, DCGasteyer was a Washington, DC native and attended Chelsea Clinton's alma mater, Sidwell, before heading off to Northwestern.
Gates, BillLakeside School, SeattleGates grew up in Seattle and attended Lakeside, but dropped out to go off to Harvard. Lakeside is mentioned in the novel and film, This Boys Life, which chronicles the story of Tobias Wolff. In the story, he takes the SAT at Lakeside and ends up accepted at Hill School. Gellar, Sarah MichelleProfessional Children's School, NYC, NYOne person wrote to say Gellar also attended Columbia Grammar and Prep, which is mentioned in the heading for Ally Sheedy. PCS is where many child stars head off to in NYC. The school day is organized to allow for professional commitments. Other PCS graduates are Adam Arkin, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Luckinbill, Milton Berle, Sidney Lumet, Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Midori, Christina Ricci, Ally Hillfiger (Tommy's duaghter), Mischa Barton of "O.C.," Jamie Gleicher of MTV's "Rich Girls," and Christopher Walken. Other alums and graduates include Tara Reid, Jena Malone, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Julia Stiles, Gaby Hoffman, the Culkin kids, Vanessa Carlton, Rickie Lake, and Phoebe Cates. One article in Us magazine placed Gellar at LaGuardia HS in NYC, the "Fame" school. She said she hated it and "got beat up pretty much every day."
Giamatti, Paul and Marcus and A. BartlettChoate Rosemary Hall, Wallingford, CT; Hopkins School, New Haven, CTActor Paul Giamatti went to Choate, where numerous luminaries went. His dad, the late A. Bartlett Giamatti, was president of Yale and a famous baseball commissioner, went to Andover. Both schools are mentioned numerous times on these pages. One correspondent wrote to say Giamatti the Younger's mother taught at a grammar school down the road from Choate. Marcus Giamatti graduated from the Hopkins School in New Haven as a member of the class of 1980. Hopkins is popular with Yalie families and was founded amazingly in 1660. Others to come through Hopkins incude author Trey Ellis and John Malone ('59)
Golden, ArthurBaylor School, Chattanooga, TNGolden, who wrote "Memoirs of a Geisha," went to this Tennessee boarding school, where Hugh "Ward Cleaver" Beaumont went as well. So did the founder of the Hard Rock Cafe, Isaac Tigrett. (I wonder if they made field trips to see Rock City.)
Gore, AlSt. Albans and National Cathedral School, Washington, DCGore, like Brit Hume, Jesse Jackson, Jr., and members of the Bush Family, attended the Washington, DC boys powerhouse, St. Alban's (see mention under the Bush Family). He graduated in 1965. Gore chose its all girl equivalent, National Cathedral School, for his daughters, and Sidwell Friends for his son. Two people have written me to say his son, Al, Jr., started out at St. Alban's but left in 8th grade before transferring to (Quaker) Sidwell Friends. Apparently, there's a story there. Both schools are located adjacent to the Washington National Cathedral. Other families who chose the National Cathedral School for their girls are the Roosevelts, the Rockefellers, the Firestones (Mary), the Wilsons of Wilson sports, former Secretary of State James Baker, and Clinton Administration bad-guy Webster Hubbel. As for St. Alban's, it is connected to Senator Evan Bayh and Congressmen Harold Ford (Class of 1988), Bruce Babbitt (son), Jesse Jackson (son), Walter Mondale (son), the Rockefellers, Rodney Frelinghuysen, PGA golfer Olin Browne (1975), Harvard law professor and author Randall Kennedy (1973), journalist David Ignatius (1968), astronaut Michael Collins (1948), and Charlie Bass. Other St. Albans connections, according to my source: the Roosevelts, NFL player Jonathan Ogden (Class of 1991), "Simpsons" producers Josh Weinstein and Bill Oakley, "Motley Fools" David and Tom Gardner, former FCC head Reed Hunt, Marriott head Bill Marriott, the Fords of Ford Modeling fame, and reportedly the (Dan) Qayles and the (Bill) Frists. St. Louis University High is where Thomas Dooley went adn where members the Gunn family was educated: James (of "Scooby Doo"), Sean (of "Gilmour Girls" fame), and Sundance winner Matt.

Gray, SpauldingFryeburg Academy, Fryeburg, MERenaissance man Gray went to this Maine academy at which Daniel Webster was a Head (1802). John Hancock signed its charter of incorporation.
Guccione, BobBlair Academy, Blairstown, NJPenthouse founder and publisher Guccione went to this bucolic New Jersey prep school, which was founded by a railroad titan. Blair is the official rival of Peddie, also mentioned here, and has an annual Peddie Day. A correspondent of mine lists other beneficiaries of a Blair education as mutual funds titan John Bogle, the late actor-director John Cassavetes, gossip columnist Taki, and rock-and-roll Hall of Famer John Sebastien of the Lovin' Spoonfull. Patton, director Oliver Stone, and several other notables, including the Hunt Brothers of Texas and James A. Hanssen, RobertThe Heights School, Potomac, MDHanssen, a notorious and vile spy, sent his kids here on his FBI salary, which he augmented with money from the Russians. The school is an Opus Dei School for boys. Soccer whiz Freddy Adu also attended The Heights and played for the school. It's equivalent for girls is Oakcrest, where his daughters went.
Harris, JeanMadeira School, McLean, VAIn the 1970s, Harris was Headmistress of the Thomas School in Rowayton, CT before heading to Madeira, a school popular with elite Washington families. She was tried and convicted for the death of "Scarsdale Diet" guru Dr. Herman Tarnower. Thomas was its own school in those days, by the way. Later it merged with Low-Heywood/King School. Other notables who attended Madeira were Frances Sternhagen, Stockard Channing, Blair Brown, the late Katherine Graham of the Washington Post, and former economic tsar Alice Rivlin. One person wrote to tell me Harris' bio has her in back of a cabin on the Madiera campus practicing shooting with the gun with which she would kill Tarnower.
Hawke, EthanHun School, Princeton, NJActor and budding novelist Hawke went to this New Jersey school, which was started by a Princeton math teacher. Note that first wife Uma is another preppie: Northfield Mount Hermon. While at Hun, Hawke was linked to Marti Meyerson, who is the wife of Giant magazine founder Jamie Hooper.
Hayward Family (Brooke, Leland, Margaret Sullavan, et al)Various Schools: Horace Mann, Pomfret, Hotchkiss, Chatham Hall, Westlake, Greenwich Academy, Brunswick, Emma Willard, Madeira, Lawrenceville, Le Rosey, Eaglebrook, et al.Leland Hayward was a Hollywood agent and Broadway producer at one time married to the actress Margaret Sullavan. They had three children, including Brooke, a beautiful model/actress who was married to Dennis Hopper (see separate listing for Hopper). Leland Hayward was from a famous family in its own right. He attended a number of schools, including Horace Mann, Pomfret, and Hotchkiss. Hotchkiss is a traditional school located in Lakeville, CT and is mentioned in the sections for the Ford family, John Hersey, and Peter Matthiessen. Horace Mann is mentioned in these pages under Bob Rafelson, Ray Cohn, and James Salter. Pomfret is also mentioned under a listing for Adam Hochschild. Sullavan herself was a southern belle and a 1927 graduate of Chatham Episcopal Institute (see entry for Jonathan Yardley) where she was talented and popular. The Hayward children grew up with Henry Fonda's kids and went to several schools. Bridget and Brooke each went to Westlake, mentioned throughout these pages, but Margaret Sullavan pulled them out, thinking it was too snobby. Later, the family settled in Greenwich, CT where Brooke attended the all-girls Greenwich Academy with Jane Fonda, described by Brooke in her autobiography as an "august brick building" where the students wore green uniforms. Jane later went off to Emma Willard (see listing for Fonda) while Brooke spent two years at Madeira (see listing for Jean Harris), culminating in a "splendid" senior year. Bridget went off to boarding school, probably Le Rosey (see listing for Sean Lennon). Bill went to Brunswick, where the Skakel kids went. Brunswick is located very close to Greenwich Academy. Later, Bill went to Lawrenceville (see listing for James Merrill) and a junior school called Eaglebrook.
Head, EdithBishop's School, La Jolla, CAHead was a famous Hollywood costume designer who attended Bishop's, as did Versace's assasin, Andrew Cunanan.

Hearst FamilyVarious SchoolsI get a lot of mail about the Hearsts. Anne and Patty went to Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton, CA, I'm told, and someone else wrote to say Patty went to Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough, CA. One correspondent tells me that Amanda Hearst, daughter of Anne Hearst, went to the all-girl Chapin School in New York City and then transferred to Choate Rosemary Hall, where JFK, Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, Ivanka Trump, Dierks Bentley, Tim Disney, and a score of other celebrities went. Patty Hearst's daughters (Gillian and Lydia Hearst-Shaw) attended Lawrenceville, in New Jersey, where Huey Lewis graduated. One graduated; the other left before graduation, I'm told. Henry Ford II, Edsel Ford, and current Ford CEO Bill Ford all attended this school, which is located in a woodland setting with two lakes on the grounds. The school is rooted in classical education and offers more than 225 different classes in a 6-day school week. The endowment is among the richest in private schools: nearly $400 million. Time Magazine's Henry Luce also went here--on scholarship. Other Hotchkiss notables include renaissance man Peter Matthiessen, Robert Bork, Forest Mars (of M&Ms fame), Wlater Chrysler, bandleader Peter Duchin, Charles Edison (of NJ), Ambassador Clark "Sandy" Randt, poet Archibald MacLeish, Justice Potter Stewart, businessman Arthur Kittredge Watson, actress Allison Janney, Paul Nitze, Henry Lewis Lapham II, John Henry Hammond, Jr., producer Tom Werner, Jim Harmon, and baseball commissioner Francis Thomas Vincent. Others: CIA head Porter Goss, Herbert Dow, Gustav Fleischmann of yeast fame, David Gimbel, financier Franklin Gould, Thomas Remington, Charles Chubb, Paul Converse, George Mead of paper fame, and still others. Hotchkiss alumni are called "Kissies."
